Two things set what you pay for cigarettes in Canada: the brand, and where you buy it. A carton of a national brand at a Newfoundland gas station runs past $200. The same 200 cigarettes in a Canadian discount brand, ordered online, is $49.99.

Below is every brand we carry with its 2026 carton price, what each one is actually like to smoke, what retail costs province by province, and why the two numbers are so far apart.

Cigarette brands and prices list, Canada 2026

All prices are per carton of 200 cigarettes. Buy five cartons and 5% comes off; ten cartons takes off 10%.

Popular Canadian cigarette brands, one by one

Canadian Classics

Canadian Classics Original cigarettes carton, $49.99 at Canada Smokes

$49.99 per carton · Original, Silver

The household name among Canadian cigarette brands. The Original is full flavour with a smooth, consistent draw, which is why it stays in our top three sellers month after month. Silver is the light version and stays easy on the throat without thinning the taste out.

If you are switching from Du Maurier or Export A and want the closest match, start here. Buy Canadian Classics

Canada Goose

Canada Goose Full Flavour cigarettes carton, $49.99 at Canada Smokes

$49.99 per carton · Full Flavour, Light

The Full Flavour is a bold Canadian blend that finishes smooth, so it hits hard without the rough edge some full-strength brands have. Worth trying if a full flavour has ever felt harsh to you.

The Light is built for low harshness and an even, steady burn, which makes it a sensible daily carton rather than an occasional one. Buy Canada Goose

BB Cigarettes

BB Full Flavor cigarettes carton, $49.99 at Canada Smokes

$49.99 per carton · Full Flavor, Light

Made from native Canadian tobacco. The Full Flavor gives you a strong, full-bodied draw at a budget price, which is the whole appeal. The Light drops the nicotine and the bite while keeping the flavour intact.

A common first order for people moving off a national brand on price. Buy BB cigarettes

Nexus Cigarettes

Nexus Full Flavour cigarettes carton, $49.99 at Canada Smokes

$49.99 per carton · Full Flavour, Light, plus Menthol and Ultra Light in the range

The Full Flavour is one of the more intense blends we carry, rich and powerful but still smooth rather than rough. The Light is balanced and steady, made for smoking through a full day.

Nexus has the widest strength range on this list, so it is the easiest brand to step down within without changing brand entirely. Buy Nexus

Putters Cigarettes

Putters Light cigarettes carton and pack, $49.99 at Canada Smokes

$49.99 per carton · Light

Canadian-made, light draw, and it keeps a satisfying finish rather than tasting thin. One of the more common step-down brands for people coming off a full flavour who do not want to go all the way to an ultra light.

Buy Putters

Bagged Rollies

Bagged Rollies Full Flavour native tobacco, $28.99 at Canada Smokes

$28.99 per carton · Full Flavour, Light

Our single best-selling product, and the cheapest way to smoke on this page by a wide margin. Native tobacco in clear, vacuum-sealed bags, grown and rolled by First Nations manufacturers. No packaging premium, no brand markup.

You roll them yourself, which is the trade-off. Buy Bagged Rollies Full Flavour or Light

Other brands we carry

Which brand is closest to Du Maurier or Export A?

The question we get more than any other. Du Maurier’s appeal is a smooth draw with a rich blend, refined rather than rough. The two closest matches in this catalogue are Canadian Classics Original and Canada Goose Full Flavour. Both are full-strength Canadian blends that finish smooth instead of harsh, and both are $49.99 a carton against roughly $150 to $195 for a retail carton of a national brand.

If you smoke a light rather than a full flavour, start with Canadian Classics Silver or Canada Goose Light.

Most popular cigarette brands in Canada

Nationally, Du Maurier, Export A and Canadian Classics hold the biggest share of the retail market. That is shelf space in gas stations and convenience stores, and it mostly reflects price per pack and decades of distribution.

What people actually order online looks different. Our top five by volume:

  1. Bagged Rollies Full Flavour
  2. Canadian Lights
  3. Canadian Classics Original
  4. Bagged Rollies Light
  5. Canadian Full Flavour

Two of the top five are loose tobacco, which tells you how much of online buying is driven by cost per cigarette rather than brand loyalty.

How many cigarette brands are sold in Canada?

There is no single register, but they sort into three groups.

National brands come from three manufacturers: Imperial Tobacco Canada, JTI-Macdonald, and Rothmans, Benson & Hedges. Between them they run the familiar names, including Du Maurier, Player’s, Export A, Belmont, Peter Jackson, Macdonald and Marlboro’s Canadian version.

Canadian discount brands are a much longer list and change more often. These are the $49.99 cartons.

Native-made brands are produced by First Nations manufacturers and are what most online buyers end up with, whether or not the packaging says so.

We currently carry 16 brands across those last two groups. Browse them all here.

Retail cigarette prices by province

Retail price is mostly tax, which is why the same pack swings so far between provinces. These are the estimated prices for an average pack of 20 and carton of 200, including federal excise, provincial tobacco tax, GST/HST and retail markup.

ProvincePer packPer carton
Quebec$15.36$153.56
Ontario$15.92$159.24
Alberta$17.46$174.59
New Brunswick$17.99$179.88
Saskatchewan$18.33$183.34
Manitoba$18.62$186.22
Nova Scotia$18.83$188.35
Prince Edward Island$19.00$190.00
British Columbia$19.24$192.38
Newfoundland and Labrador$19.75$197.54

Quebec and Ontario are the cheapest provinces to buy at retail. Newfoundland and BC are the most expensive. These are estimates from Physicians for a Smoke-Free Canada, in effect April 1, 2025. Individual brands land a few dollars either side, provincial rates move, usually in the spring, and independent retailers price above chains. Wherever you are, we ship at the same price.

How much is a carton of cigarettes in Ontario?

About $159 for an average brand. Of that, $53.00 is the cigarettes at wholesale, $12.81 is the store markup, $38.16 is federal excise, $36.95 is Ontario tobacco tax and $18.32 is HST. So roughly $93 of the carton is tax.

How much is a carton of cigarettes in Alberta?

About $175. Alberta has no provincial sales tax, but its tobacco tax is $60.00 a carton against $36.95 in Ontario.

How much is a carton of cigarettes in BC?

About $192, the highest of the large provinces. BC charges $65.00 a carton in tobacco tax, plus GST and PST on top.

How many packs are in a carton?

A carton is 200 cigarettes: 10 packs of 20, or 8 packs of 25.

Are cigarette prices going up in 2026?

Yes, and it is almost entirely tax rather than tobacco.

Federal excise duty on cigarettes is adjusted every April 1 against the Consumer Price Index. As of April 1, 2026 the federal rate is $0.97299 per five cigarettes, or about $38.92 on a carton of 200, before any provincial tobacco tax and before GST/HST. A cigarette inventory tax of $0.00382 per cigarette applied on the same date. Both rates are published by the CRA in excise duty notice EDN105

That federal amount is identical whether the carton retails at $50 or $200. Provincial tobacco tax stacks on top, and that is where the gap between Quebec and Newfoundland comes from. For the province by province breakdown, see our Canadian cigarette tax guide.

Why the price gap between brands is so wide

Tax is flat

Excise is charged per cigarette, not as a percentage of value. The same roughly $38.92 in federal duty sits inside a $49.99 carton and a $195 one. Everything above that is blend, manufacturing and brand.

Distribution costs money

A national brand pays for placement in tens of thousands of retail outlets, plus the retailer’s margin on every pack. A brand sold direct skips all of it. This is the single biggest reason for the difference.

Blend and leaf grade

The $89.99 brands use proprietary blends rather than commodity tobacco. That is what the extra $40 buys.

Format

A carton of 200 is cheaper per cigarette than ten packs of 20. Bagged rollies are cheaper again because you are buying tobacco rather than finished cigarettes.

Cheap or premium, what the step up gets you

$28.99. Bagged rollies. Lowest cost per cigarette on this page. You roll them yourself.

$49.99. The bulk of the catalogue. Full flavour through ultra light and menthol all sit at the same price, so you can move between strengths without changing your budget.

$89.99. Rold Leaf, Oakdale, Sago and Menage Devilish. A specific blend for people who already know what they want.

Most first orders land in the $49.99 tier. That is the sensible place to start.

How to pick a brand

Start with strength

Full flavour, light, ultra light. Coming off a national full flavour, go to Canadian Classics Original or Canada Goose Full Flavour. Coming off a light, go to Canadian Classics Silver, Canadian Lights, Nexus Light or Putters Light. For the gentlest draw we carry, try Playfare’s Ultra Light or Canadian Ultra Lights.

Then flavour

Menthol runs through Canadian and, when stocked, BB, Nexus, Playfare’s and Discount.

Then price

With no strong preference, order one carton from the $49.99 tier before committing to five or ten. The bulk discount is still there next time. For a shorter list rather than the full catalogue, see Top 10 Best Cigarettes in Canada.
